A. How to Raise Money When You Think the Sky Is Falling
A slowed economy can wreak fear in the hearts of experienced fundraisers. Join economist Dr. Chris
Colburn, Chair of the Department of Economics at ODU; Certified Financial Planner Marian B. Ticatch of
Ticatch Financial Management; and Rob Cross, Director of the Virginia Arts Festival, as they provide
insight into how the economy really effects fundraising and how you can still raise money when you think
the sky is falling.
B. Marketing Your Non-Profit: Cultivating Donors through Creative Marketing
Dave Iwans, President and Creative Director of DIA Marketing Advertising Public Relations,
will answer questions and share thoughtful, creative approaches to help successfully cultivate donors
through strategic marketing techniques. Why are some organizations more successful than others?
What have you always wanted to know? Make the most of this “ask the expert” session and please bring
your questions.

A panel discussion exploring donor motivation and trends in giving with leading local philanthropists
representing individual, corporate, and foundation funders including Margaret Blackwell, Northrop
Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News; Susan Hirschbiel, Community Activist; Dr. Edward L. Lilly,
Community Leader; and Deborah Wyld, Norfolk Southern Foundation.
B. Engaging Groups and Organizations
A growing trend in fundraising is utilizing third parties to help engage donors and prospects. Thaler
McCormick, Executive Director of ForKids, will motivate you with new ways for your organization to
involve outside agencies that will help expand your volunteer fundraisers while growing your revenue
and your family of donors.

Angelica D. Light, President and CEO of The Norfolk Foundation, will present highlights of the seventh annual Dimensions of Philanthropy in Hampton Roads study. Angelica, before joining The Norfolk Foundation in 1999, worked as an attorneyfor Norfolk Southern Corporation and Shenandoah Life Insurance Company in Roanoke. At Shenandoah Life, she was vice president and general counsel. She is a member of the VirginiaState Bar, the Virginia Bar Association and the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association. She isa graduate of Smith College
and the Washington and Lee School of Law. She is a graduate of The CIVIC Leadership Institute.
Keynote Speaker: Cathy Lewis
Cathy is host of What Matters, a weekly public affairs program on WHRO TV15
and HearSay with Cathy Lewis, the popular lunch hour talk show that debuted
on 89.5 WHRV-FM in October 1996. She’s a regular winner of reader polls in
PortFolio Weekly and Hampton Roads Magazine. A professional member of
the National Speakers Association, Cathy is a popular keynote speaker and
moderator at forums, panels and seminars that bring people together to talk
about the important issues that face citizens of the region and the nation.
Cathy is the Executive Director of The CIVIC Leadership Institute.
